Question
A dehydration experiment starting with 16.6mL of 2-methyl cuclohexonl in phosphoric acid yields 12.55 g of distillates GC analysis shows the major product 1-methlcuclohexane as 62% of the product mixture and 3-methylcyclohexene as 21% the remainder is unraveled alchol calculate the percent yield of alkenes in the reaction
Expert Solution
Step 1

Given,

Volume of 2-methylcyclohexanol = 16.6 mL

Density of 2-methylcyclohexanol = 0.93 g/ml (taken from literature)

Mass of 2- methyl cyclohexanol = density × volume

= 0.93 × 16.6 = 15.438 g

Molar mass of 2-methylcyclohexanol = 114.19 g /mole

Moles of 2-methylcyclohexanol mass/molar mass = 15.438/114.19 = 0.135 mol

Mles of products will be in ratio of 1: 1

So,  moles of products = 0.135 mol

Mass of distilate = 12.55 g

Percent of 1-methylcyclohexene = 62 % of 12.55g

= (62×12.55) /100

= 7.781 g

Molar mass of 1-methylcyclohexene = 96.17 g/mol

So,  theoretical yield of 1-methylcyclohexene = mole × molar mass

= 0.135 × 96.17 = 12.98g

So,  present yield = actual yield×100/ theoretical yield

= 7.781×100/12.98

=59.95 % =60%
