A retired 67-year-old, low-income client makes an appointment with you, a tax professional, to have a tax return prepared. Once you review their documents, you realize this is
a simple return. The firm charges a minimum of $500 per tax return prepared, which is a significant amount of money for the taxpayer. Create one initial post and respond to at least two of your classmates.
For your initial post, address the following:
1. What might you do to help a retired 67-year-old, low-
income client with a simple return?
2. What options are available to low-income taxpayers?
3. Why would a retired 67-year-old, low-income client be eligible for one of these options— VITA or TCE—over another?
1. What specific income and tax papers would this client need for eligibility in either program?
For your response posts, address the following:
1. What other options are available to low-income taxpayers
besides the options your peer mentioned?
2. What are some potential ethical issues related to your classmates' responses?
Hi Class,
With the first question I would help the retired 67-year-old, by suggesting the client that since they are an elderly taxpayer there are programs like the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program and the Tax counseling for the elderly program. I would review the information provided from the client and suggest that they prepare they prepare their tax return with these programs or they could also prepare the tax return themselves with computerized filing that would be little or no cost to them. You would have to qualify for each online company that provides the ability to prepare the tax return online but it is possible.
The options for low -income taxpayer would be that you can choose from IRS free file. This free file lets qualified taxpayer prepare and file federal income tax return online using guided tax
preparations software (Internal Revenue Service, 2023). Each guided tax preparation software has their own qualification that they client would have to meet to prepare the tax return at no cost. Another option for low-income taxpayers is to file their return with the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA). The VITA program offers free tax help to people who need assistance in preparing their own tax return within the qualification. Another option would be for the taxpayer to fill out the fillable blank tax return forms and use the instructions to prepare the tax return.
A 67-year-old client/ taxpayer would be eligible for low income because the IRS provided a program (VITA) for over 50 year (Internal Revenue Service, 2023) that offers tax help to people who need assistance. The elderly client of 67-years-old would have to generated $60,000 or less, a person with disabilities. The specific income of the taxpayer would have to look into publication 3676-B, which states to prepare the tax return for free preparation income would have to be from any sources other than the section where it is stated they will not prepare, Schedule C with loss, complicated schedule D, Form 8806 and many other items that is reported
in the will not prepare section of the flyer (Internal Revenue Service Publication 3676-B, 2023).
