The Ames and Hanssen spy cases were an example of a significant intelligence or counterintelligence gaffe committed by the US government. In the four years following his voluntary service, the KGB informed Ames in a letter that they had paid him $1.88 million (Weiner et al., 2014). A comprehensive affidavit describing Hanssen's systematic transfer of highly secret national security and counterintelligence information for diamonds and cash exceeding $600,000 was filed in the Hanssen case (Federal Bureau of Investigation, n.d.). Additionally, Ames's career exposed serious flaws in the CIA's personnel policies; he was a low-ranking official with a public history of alcoholism, yet he oversaw counterespionage and counterintelligence operations as well as CIA-FBI interaction pertaining to these matters. Another flaw that the spy crisis revealed was a lack of effective communication between the executive and legislative branches regarding intelligence-related matters (Clark & Mitchell, 2018). The FBI and CIA launched investigations after learning the details of the men's mysterious fortune. Ultimately, both men were charged and brought to trial. In my opinion, other measures ought to have been implemented. I believe that regular evaluations of their backgrounds and finances should have been carried out, since they are federal agents with access to highly sensitive material; this would have allowed for the sooner disclosure of this information. The fact that Ames was a subpar officer with a history of alcoholism should have been a major red flag that led to his dismissal. Furthermore, it is crucial to establish stricter protocols and oversight within federal agencies to prevent similar incidents in
the future. Regular psychological evaluations and mandatory reporting of any suspicious behavior should be implemented to ensure the early detection of potential threats. This proactive approach would not only protect national security but also maintain public trust in these institutions.

Question 2Wirecard’s auditors are being faced with legal action after the collapse of the scandal-hitGerman payments firm. The German shareholders’ association SdK said it had filed criminal complaint against auditors at Ernst & Young (EY). The accountancy firm, EY refused to sign off Wirecard’s 2019 books after discovering1.9billion euros (US$2.1 billion) of cash had gone missing from its balance sheet. Munich-based Wirecard filed for insolvency, marking a tumultuous fall for the group. Wirecard, which is still listed on the DAX 30, has seen its share price capitulate since the accounting black hole was revealed. EY told CNBC that there were “clear indications that this was an elaborate and sophisticated fraud, involving multiple parties around the world in different institutions, with a deliberate aim of deception.” In an attempt to defend its reputation, the group added that “even the most robust and extended audit procedures” couldn’t uncover what it called a “collusive…
