3-2 Assignment: Costing Methods
July 15, 2023
Company Overview
I chose Amazon for my company to analyze for costing methods. Amazon was my choice because the company is a highly used company in my household. Amazon sells just about anything you can think of, and they are increasing the product lines every year. Their products range from electronics to books to even food and grocery products. Amazon makes it very easy for their consumers and their consumers receive the products very quickly usually
within 1-2 days. It makes shopping very simple especially around the holidays. They have recently even put in place recurring orders such as food and household products which makes it even easier. Costing Methods
Amazon does use the costing method known as Activity Based Costing which is when a company “assigns overhead and indirect costs to related products and services. This accounting method of costing recognizes the relationship between costs, overhead activities and manufactured products, assigning indirect costs to products less arbitrarily than traditional
costing methods.” (Kenton, 2023). This signifies that Amazon will evaluate its sales on each product and then sets the price based on the cost for that product. Amazons sales shows that it
really reviews its costs and determines if it is cost effective to continue marketing and producing that each of its products.
Factory Overhead
Factory overhead costs for Amazon include their warehouses and their delivery vans. Costs associated with the warehouse are rent, utilities such as electric water and heat, insurance, marketing, distribution, and labor. I think for Amazon to continue to run an efficient and successful business they should continue to use the activity-based costing method as this method does use different factory overhead costs for different activities in the company. Continuing to use this method will allow them the opportunity to decide on different costs for each product based on sales. It will also help them decide on marketing efforts for each of its products. Recommendations
My recommendation is based on the success Amazon has had they should continue to use the activity-based costing method. Amazon runs a very efficient and effective business showing profits every year and always adding to its products. I remember when I only thought of Amazon for books and now there isn’t much Amazon doesn’t sell. It is almost a daily occurrence for a package from Amazon to get delivered to my house. I feel everyone used to think of Wal-Mart first and now most consumers are purchasing from Amazon. They are also always finding ways to cut costs and increase consumer satisfaction. The activity-
based costing does help Amazon determine the price its consumers will pay based on its success and the demand. I feel Amazon does control its overhead costs very well with one of their main costs being delivery costs and most of the time if you order from Amazon it is delivered without delay and usually within a day or two. This is a great thing for the consumers but also forces Amazon to follow tough expectations when it comes to the delivery
of its products.
