Task/s to be assessed
The tasks you will be observed undertaking are:
The student MUST
balance wheels and tyres for specific applications that safely and environmentally follows workplace procedures to meet required outcomes. This includes:

Balancing four [4] different wheels and tyres, in which work MUST
involve:
o
Selecting appropriate methods and techniques to balance wheels and tyres
o
Conducting wheel and tyre pre-balance inspection for damage and excessive run-out
. Oral questioning During the practical demonstration your assessor will ask you questions that will address the knowledge aspects of the unit of competency. You will respond orally, and your assessor will record your response. Topics will include:

Prepare to balance wheels and tyres
●
Conduct wheels and tyres pre-balance inspection
●
Carry out balancing procedures
●
Complete work processes
Time allowed
On average, the Assessment should take 2 – 4 hours to complete each Job Card.
Location
Assessment will take place in a simulated workshop environment relevant to the trade stream being studied.
Practical Practice
You should have practiced these practical tasks and feel comfortable completing the tasks before attempting the practical assessment.
Decision making rules
To achieve a satisfactory outcome, you MUST

involve:
o
Selecting appropriate methods and techniques to balance wheels and tyres

Conducting wheel and tyre pre-balance inspection for damage and excessive run-out
Performance Observation Criteria for Assessment Task
The assessment methods MUST
be by direct observation of tasks on required skills and knowledge to ensure correct interpretation and application. Your Assessor will observe you on the following observations:
●
Obtain and read through job card to identify the correct vehicle to work on and discuss why the vehicle wheels and tyres require balancing with the customer.
●
Access and understand the correct workshop manual for the vehicle they are about
to balance the wheels and tyres, including wheel nut torque specification and wheel
and tyre run-out procedures and specifications and the wheel balancer machine instructions.
●
Observe all safety requirements, wear correct PPE and identify any hazards with working rotating wheels and tyres and flying objects, lifting and supporting the vehicles or machinery on vehicle hoist or Jack/Stands and managed risks by following Safe Operating Procedures (SOPs).
●
Select the correct tools, service equipment and materials for balancing wheels and tyres, including conducting pre-balance run-out, and checked that the tools, service
equipment and materials are safe to use, and any unsafe tools, equipment and materials are tagged out of service for repairs.
●
Follow the manufactures workplace procedures and wearing correct PPE, safely lifted the vehicle to a safe working high, and carried out pre-balance inspection of all four [4] wheels and tyres for damage, including tread depth and tyre pressure and checked for excessive run-out using the dial indicator and record the results of all four [4] wheels and tyres on the Job Card, then compared results the manufactures workplace manual specification and discussed the results and repair recommendations to the customer or workplace supervisor.
●
Follow the manufactures workplace procedures and using tools and equipment selected, removed all four [4] wheels and tyre assemblies from the vehicle using the impact gun and impact sockets and safely lowered the wheel and tyre assemble to the ground manually or using wheel and tyre lifting equipment.
●
Follow the wheel balancer machine instructions, safely inspected the wheel balancer machine for safe operation and set and calibrate the wheel balancing machine without causing damage to the wheel balancing machine.
●
Follow the wheel balancer machine instructions, wearing the correct PPE and using
correct manual handling techniques, mounted the wheel and tyre onto the wheel balancing machine and entered the wheel and tyre size into the wheel balancing Document Name:

machine, and balanced each four [4] wheels and tyres and removed and fitted wheel weights to wheel rims without causing damage to wheel or tyre.
●
Use the vehicle manufactures workshop manual, interpret and understood the wheel and tyres assembly fitting instructions, such as; vehicle manufactures recommended wheel nuts/lugs tightening sequence, wheel nuts/lugs torque settings, manual or power tool fitment.
●
Follow the workplace safe work procedures and the vehicle manufactures workshop manual, safely raised the wheel and tyre assemble to the wheel hub manually or using wheel and tyre lifting equipment and refitted the wheel and tyre assemblies to the vehicle using manual or power tool such as; the impact gun and torque limiting bar sockets by carrying out the vehicle manufactures correct tightening sequence and torqued the wheel nuts/lugs as per the vehicle manufactures recommended wheel nuts/lugs torque specification.
●
Carry out a final inspection of the customers vehicle to ensure that the wheel and tyre balanced completed are to the workplace service standards, the vehicle operates correctly, and the vehicle is clean, seat and floor cover removed and ready to be given back to the customer.
●
Follow the workplace procedures, clean the work area of any lubricant waste and disposed recyclable and non-recycle lubricant waste into correct waste or recycling bins.
●
Follow the workplace procedures, clean and check tools and equipment used for correct operation and tagged out and report any faulty tools and equipment.
●
Complete and finalise the Job Card/Repair Order detailing the service carried out, parts and materials used and vehicle inspection finding.

satisfactorily complete all the assessment tasks you will be deemed NYC – Not Yet Competent.
●
If the evidence is graded as NS – Not Satisfactory you will be required to re-submit the evidence. In this case, you will be provided with clear and constructive feedback based on the assessment decision so that they can improve your skills / knowledge prior to reassessment. ●
Where a ‘NS – Not Satisfactory’ judgement is made, you will be given guidance on steps to take to improve your performance and provided the opportunity to resubmit
evidence to demonstrate competence. The assessor will determine and discuss the
reasons for NS – Not satisfactory on any of the criteria and will assess you through a different method of assessment e.g. verbal/oral questioning, problem solving exercises. Reasonable Adjustment
Assessor may adjust assessment conditions (vehicles, tools, analysis required) to suit workplace objectives provided that the integrity of the task is maintained.

Your Trainer/Assessor has setup the vehicle that requires the wheels and tyres to be balanced. Your Trainer/Assessor
will observe you against the performance observation criteria for balance wheels and tyres.
Procedure:
WARNING!
The Assessment will be STOPPED IMMEDIATELY if you are attempting to carry out any step in an unsafe or
dangerous way.
1.
Obtain tools and equipment from your trainer. 2.
Ask your trainer to direct you to a vehicle to work on.
3.
You MUST
answer the Assessor’s verbal questions
4.
You MUST
write the customers concern (service requirements) on the front of the Job Card.
5.
You MUST
conduct a wheel and tyre pre-balance inspection for damage and excessive runout as specified in the vehicles workshop manual. You must report your findings to the customer by filling in the Faults for the inspection of the wheel and tyre on the back of the Job Card.

conduct a wheel and tyre pre-balance inspection for damage and excessive runout as specified in the vehicles workshop manual. You must report your findings to the customer by filling in the Faults for the inspection of the wheel and tyre on the back of the Job Card.

You MUST
select the appropriate methods and techniques, balance four (4) DIFFERENT
wheel and tyre as
specified in the wheel balancer instructions.

You MUST
clean-up work area, tools and equipment are stowed in their appropriate area and finalise Job Card documentation by filling in the Customers Fault, the Cause of the Fault, the Rectification to repair the vehicle and the Parts used on the back of the Job Card

The vehicle, its accessories and contents are at my risk entirely whether theft or loss thereof or damaged thereto arises from any want of care on the part of yourself or your contractors or servants or from any cause whatsoever.
