Chapter 2, Problem 6P

In the purely resistive circuit shown in Fig. P2.6, the total resistance R of the circuit is given by

R = R 1 + R 1 R 2 R 1 + R 2 (2.58)

If the total resistance of the circuit is R = 100 Ω and R 2 = 2 R 1 + 100 Ω . find

R 2 and R 1 as follows:

(a) Substitute the values of R and R 2 into equation (2.58), and simplify the resulting expression to obtain a single quadrate equation for R 1 . (b) Using the method of your choice, solve the quadratic equation for R 1 and compute the corresponding value of R 2 .

The National Weather Service uses the following formula to calculate the wind chill:W = 35.74 + 0.6215 Ta − 35.75 V0.16 + 0.4275 Ta V0.16where W is the wind chill temperature in ◦F, Ta is the air temperature in ◦F, and V is thewind speed in miles per hour. Note that W is defined only for air temperatures at or lowerthan 50◦F and wind speeds above 3 miles per hour.(a) Suppose the air temperature is 42◦ and the wind speed is 7 miles per hour. Find thewind chill temperature. Round your answer to two decimal places.(b) Suppose the air temperature is 37◦F and the wind chill temperature is 30◦F. Find thewind speed. Round your answer to two decimal places.
