There is no evidence to support the claim that very low birth weight are more likely to be smaller than normal adults.

Explanation of Solution

Given:

  $n_1$ = Premature sample size = 242

  $x_1$ =number of preemies = 24

  $n_2$ =Normal sample size = 233

  $x_2$ =Number of subnormal heights = 12

Calculation:

The null and alternative hypotheses:

  $\begin{array}{l}{H}_0:p_1=p_2\\ H_a:p_1<p_2\end{array}$

We have to use z-test for two proportions.

Z = 1.93

P-value = 0.9734

Decision: P-value > 0.05, fail to reject H0.

Conclusion: There is no evidence to support the claim that very low birth weight are more likely to be smaller than normal adults.
