To find: The speed of current.

Answer to Problem 27AYU
Speed of current is 5 miles per hour.
Explanation of Solution
Given information:
Speed of motorboat is 15 miles per hour relative to the water.
Boat makes a trip of 10 miles upstream and return in 1.5 hours.
Calculation:
As per the given information −
Speed of motorboat is 15 miles per hour relative to the water.
Let us suppose speed of current is x miles per hour.
Boat makes a trip of 10 miles upstream and return in 1.5 hours.
While going upstream speed of current is subtracted and while going downstream speed of the current gets added in the speed of the boat.
Total time taken during upstream and downstream is 1.5 hours.
This can be written mathematically as -
1015−x+1015+x=1.5⇒10(15+x)+10(15−x)=1.5(15+x)(15−x)⇒300=32(225−x2)⇒600=675−3x2⇒3x2=675−600⇒x2=753⇒x2=25⇒x=5 {Since speed cannot be negative}
Hence, speed of current is 5 miles per hour.
