Testing Claims About Proportions. In Exercises 7–22, test the given claim. Identify the null hypothesis, alternative hypothesis, test statistic, P-value or critical value(s), then state the conclusion about the null hypothesis, as well as the final conclusion that addresses the original claim.
12. Clinical Trials of OxyContin OxyContin (oxycodone) is a drug used to treat pain, but it is well known for its addictiveness and danger. In a clinical trial, among subjects treated with OxyContin, 52 developed nausea and 175 did not develop nausea. Among other subjects given placebos, 5 developed nausea and 40 did not develop nausea (based on data from Purdue Pharma L.P.). Use a 0.05 significance level to test for a difference between the rates of nausea for those treated with OxyContin and those given a placebo.
a. Use a hypothesis test.
b. Use an appropriate confidence interval.
c. Does nausea appear to be an adverse reaction resulting from OxyContin?

- Scenario: I'm interested in whether there is a relationship between Team (A vs. B) and Outcome (Good vs. Bad). Below are the data. Test the null hypothesis that the categories are independent. α= .05. Team A Team B Good Outcome fo = 75 fe = fo = 45 fe = Bad Outcome fo = 25 fe = fo = 5 fe = What is the correct result based on the data?arrow_forward- test the null hypothesis that the population mean, u is 14.arrow_forwardFinal Conclusions. In Exercises 25–28, use a significance level of α = 0.05 and use the given information for the following: a. State a conclusion about the null hypothesis. (Reject H0 or fail to reject H0) b. Without using technical terms or symbols, state a final conclusion that addresses the original claim. Original claim: The standard deviation of pulse rates of adult males is more than 11 bpm. The hypothesis test results in a p-value of 0.3045.arrow_forward
- Hypertension It has been found that 26% of men 20 years and older suffer from hypertension (high blood pressure) and 31.5% of women are hypertensive. A random sample of 136 of each gender was selected from recent hospital records, and the following results were obtained. Can you conclude that a higher percentage of women have high blood pressure? Use a =0.10. Men 50 patients had high blood pressure Women 63 patients had high blood pressure for the proportion of men with high blood pressure and round all intermediate calculations to at least three decimal places. Use P1arrow_forwardAspirin III: Decision and Conclusion Regarding the experiment in the data frame Aspirin from the abd package, the researchers wanted to know whether or not taking aspirin affects one's risk of developing cancer. Recall that they defined their parameters as follows: p1 = the proportion of ALL individuals who would develop cancer, if all of them were to take aspirin like the subjects in the Aspirin group did. p2 = the proportion of ALL individuals who would develop cancer, if all of them were to take a placebo, like the subjects in the placebo group did. They ran the code for a two-sided significance test and got the following results: ## ## ## Inferential Procedures for the Difference of Two Proportions p1-p2:## cancer grouped by treatment ## ## ## Descriptive Results:## ## yes n estimated.prop## Aspirin 1438 19934 0.07214## Placebo 1427 19942 0.07156## ## ## Inferential Results:## ## Estimate of p1-p2: 0.0005805 ## SE(p1.hat - p2.hat): 0.002586 ## ##…arrow_forwardScenario: Erna Economist claims that a majority of Americans feel that corporations make too much profit. According to a 2019 Pew Research poll, 56% of a random sample of 1,500 adults said that business corporations make too much profit. Run a hypothesis test to assess Erna Economist's claim. It detects antibodies and antigens for HIV. A study in Statistical Science by J. Gastwirth estimated that, if the person is actually infected with HIV, this test produces a positive result 97.7% of the time. If a person is not infected with HIV, the test result is negative 92.6% of the time. According the the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC), an estimated 1.1 million Americans out of a population of 321 million were infected with HIV in 2015. Using the information above, determine the probability that a randomly selected person whose ELISA test is positive actually is infected with HIV? a. What is the probability that a randomly selected American is infected with HIV? b. Using the answer to part (a) and the conditional probabilities of positive and negative ELISA test results, fill out the contingency table below: ELISA Test Result…arrow_forward
