‘Phillip’s Wish,” by Suzanne Osorlo
My nephew likes to play
Chasing the girls makes his day.
He asked his mother
If it is okay
To get his ear pierced.
She said, “No way!”
To poke a hole through your ear,
Is not what I want for you, dear.
He argued his point quite well,
Says even my macho pal, Mel,
Has gotten this done.
It’s all just for fun.
C’mon please, mom, please, what the hell.
Again Phillip complained to his mother,
Saving half his friends (including their brothers)
Are piercing their ears
And they have no fears
He wants to be like the others.
She said, “I think it’s much less.
We must do a hypothesis test.
And If you are iight,
I won’t put up a fight.
But, if not, then my case will rest.”
We proceeded to call fifty guys
To see whose prediction would fly.
Nineteen of the fifty
Said piercing was nifty
And earrings they’d occasionally buy.
Then there’s the other thirty-one,
Who said they’d never have this done.
So now this poem’s finished.
Will his hopes be diminished,
Or will my nephew have his fun?

- Although Pythagoras preceded William Shakespeare by 2,000 years, the philosophy of the Pythagoreans is mentioned in Shakespears The Merchant of Venice. Here is a quote from that play: Thou almost makst me waver in my faith, To hold opinion will Pythagoras, That souls of animals infuse themselves Into the trunks of men. Research the Pythagoreans. What were the main beliefs held by their society? What part of the philosophy of the Pythagoreans was Shakespeare referring to specifically with this quote? What present-day religions share a similar belief? - Jay-Z is quoted as saing "If you're cool with me, I'm cool with you" Write the converse of his statement.arrow_forwardDecide whether the following makes sense (or is clearly true) or does not make sense (or is clearly false). Explain your reasoning. My chance of getting a 5 on the roll of one die is 1/6,so my chance of getting at least one 5 when I roll three dice is 3/6. Choose the correct answer below. A. This makes sense because the Chevalier used the same logic to win great sums of money. B. This does not make sense because the real probability would be 1-[5/6]^3, which is not equal to 3/6. C. This makes sense because the probability of rolling at least one five in three rolls is 1/6+1/6+1/6. D. This does not make sense because this is the same logic that the Chevalier used, which was wrong. The real probability is always 1/6.arrow_forwardSuppose that Andrea told you that "Blake and I started out with the same number of marbles, but I gave him one of mine. Now Blake has one more marble than me." Why is Andrea's reasoning incorrect? How can you address her misunderstanding? Choose the answer below that best explains the misunderstanding. A. Andrea meant to say that she took one of her marbles away and not give it to Blake. Therefore, Blake would only have one more than her. B. Blake needs to take one of his marbles away first. Then, Andrea can give him one of hers. Thus, Blake will have one more than Andrea. C. Andrea meant to say that after giving Blake one of her marbles, she would have one less than Blake. D. Andrea has one less than she started with. Blake has one more than he started with. Therefore, Blake has two more than Andrea.arrow_forward
