Chapter 9, Problem 9.26P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

It is to be determined in which of the two solvents, ethanol or acetone, will the given reaction proceed faster via an SN2 mechanism.

Concept introduction:

An SN2 mechanism is a single-step mechanism, in which both the substrate and the nucleophile are involved. Therefore, any effect that hampers the approach of the nucleophile at the site of reaction will tend to slow down the reaction. Since the nucleophile must start forming a bond with the reaction center before the leaving group breaks off, a strong, often negatively charged nucleophile is required for an SN2 reaction. A protic solvent will strongly solvate a negatively charged nucleophile, preventing its close approach to the reaction center. Therefore, a protic solvent considerably reduces the rate of an SN2 reaction. An aprotic solvent interacts much less strongly with the negative charge of the nucleophile. Therefore, an aprotic solvent is preferred for an SN2 reaction.

An open vessel containing water stands in a laboratory measuring 5.0 m x 5.0 m x 3.0 m at 25 °C ; the vapor pressure (vp) of water at this temperature is 3.2 kPa. When the system has come to equilibrium, what mass of water will be found in the air if there is no ventilation? Repeat the calculation for open vessels containing benzene (vp = 13.1 kPa) and mercury (vp = 0.23 Pa)
Every chemist knows to ‘add acid to water with constant stirring’ when diluting a concentrated acid in order to keep the solution from spewing boiling acid all over the place.  Explain how this one fact is enough to prove that strong acids and water do not form ideal solutions.
