An experiment tested the ability of maggots to remove dead tissue from open wounds that would not heal on their own. Sterile maggots were placed in a small pouch
which, in turn, was placed on the wound. 80 women with wounds on their lower limbs were randomly assigned to receive either a traditional surgical treatment or
maggot therapy. After eight days, the percentage of dead tissue in the wounds that underwent maggot treatment was 53.7%, compared to 66.6% with the surgical
treatment. Neither patients nor the doctors evaluating the wounds knew which therapy had been applied. (Patients were blindfolded as bandages were changed.)
Surprisingly, the number of patients that reported a crawling sensation in their wound was about the same in both groups! Complete parts a through d below.

A study was conducted on 245 children who had nonlethal scorpion stings. The ages of the children ranged from 6 months to 18 years old. Each child was randomly assigned to receive a shot of the anti-venom or a placebo shot. Researchers recorded whether or not their condition improved over the next four hours. They found that about 73% of the children who were given anti-venom saw an improvement in their condition whereas only about 23% of the children who were given the placebo saw an improvement in their condition. - An experiment was conducted for better understanding of the effectiveness of a particular type of drug for reducing bad cholesterol (LDL) level. The purpose of the experiment was to determine whether different dosages used have significant different outcomes in average LDL reduction. Twenty subjects with LDL at around 250 to 300 mg/dL had participated in the study and were randomly divided into four groups. Each group was given a specific level of dosage of the drug each day for one month, with a control group that only provided with placebo. The reduction in LDL was recorded and showed in the following table. Positive number indicates reduction and negative numbers indicates increasing in DLD. - Researchers Regine Dilla and associates wanted to determine whether consumption of cola is associated with lower bone mineral density. They looked at 1125 men and 1413 women in the Framingham Osteoporosis Study, which is a cohort that began in 1971. The first examination in this study began between 1971 and 1975, with participants returning for an examination every 4 years. Based on results of questionnaires, the researchers were able to determine cola consumption on a weekly basis. Analysis of the results indicated that women who consumed at least one cola per day (on average) had a bone mineral density that was significantly lower at the femoral neck than those who consumed less than one cola per day. The researchers did not find this relation in men. (a)Why is this a cohort study? (b)What is the response variable in this study? What is the explanatory variable?
