In the precipitation reactions, combination of ions and formation of insoluble products takes place. Therefore, if some ions are mixed together and their combination can lead to the formation of insoluble ionic compounds, then it is said that precipitation reaction has occurred and the product thus formed is known as precipitate.

The precipitation reaction for the reaction Co(NO3)2(aq)+K3PO4(aq) occurs because the ion combination of Co2+(aq) and PO43(aq) leads to formation of an insoluble ionic compound Co3(PO4)2(s).
