Concept explainers
To analyze:
Why offspring resemble their parents.
Introduction:
The appearance and traits of an individual are determined by the genes the individual carries.
Explanation of Solution
Every organism on earth arises from a preexisting organism. Each individual must have a parent, and is born as a result of reproduction. Reproduction can be through both sexual and asexual means. However, in both methods, the offspring receives a copy of the genetic information from its parent(s). Since the offspring have the same (or similar) genes as their parents, they resemble them.
Offspring resemble their parents because they receive a copy of the genetic information carried by the parents. Since both have the same (or similar) genes, they will display similar traits.
