Chapter 9, Problem 1CAQ4
Summary Introduction

To review:

The given blank space in the statement, “As an individual continues to hyperventilate at high altitudes, the individual’s PaCO2(______increases;________ decreases; _________ remains the same).”

Introduction:

When an individual ascends to a high altitude, the peripheral and central chemoreceptors regulate the ventilatory pattern. The barometric pressure and PO2(arterial pressure of oxygen) decrease with an increase in the altitude. The PaO2 falls to 60 mm Hg (millimeters of mercury) with further ascending. This activates the peripheral chemoreceptors, which in turn stimulates the medulla.

Using the following lung volumes, calculate this persons FEV1 / FVC ratio. What this person's pulmonary function be clinically classified: normal, obstructive, or restricted?                TLC = 5.2 L                 FVC = 3.8                 TV = 0.5 L                 ERV = 1.1 L                 IRV = 2.2 L                 This person forcefully expired 2.4 L in one second. according to reference material, normal VC for this person is 3.6 L.
