Chapter 9, Problem 19E
Program Plan Intro

Compiler:

  • Compiler is used to convert the programs in high-level language to low-level language.
  • Compiler is a program.
    • A high-level language program may be compiled using many compilers.
  • When a program is compiled, it involves six phases of compiler namely,                Lexical analyzer, Syntax analyzer, Semantic analyzer, Intermediate code generator, Code optimizer and Code generator.

Very Long Instruction Word (VLIW) architecture:

  • In VLIW architecture, compiler or preprocessor divides the program instructions into basic operations which can be performed in parallel.
  • It is similar to Instruction Level Parallelism (ILP) which executes more than one instruction at a time.
  • It is a type of instruction set architecture that specifies the instructions to execute in required format or sequence.

Superscalar architecture:

  • Superscalar architecture is used in many processors which follows parallel computing.
  • The Central Processing Unit (CPU) related to this architecture executes multiple instructions at a time during a clock cycle.
  • The different types of execution units related to a processor are used to determine the pipelining.
  • The fetched instructions are checked in the memory and executed.
