Peristalsis is the rhythmic movement of intestinal muscles to pass the food particles, gases, and other digestive fluids through the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Any disturbances in GI tract stops the peristaltic movement and the condition is called ileus. Ileus is a post-surgical condition often painful and can return to normal peristalsis slowly.
