Chapter 9, Problem 17AQP
Summary Introduction

To identify:

The two streams without culturing them in the laboratory.

Introduction:

There is a comparison between two species of bacteria that exist in a polluted stream with the species that exist in an unpolluted stream. The physical and chemical properties of the bacteria are identified by growing them in the laboratory. In this case, it is possible that might the cultures of most of the bacteria will not grow.

Explanation of Solution

The two water samples of polluted and unpolluted areas are analyzed and compared to determine the differences between the two species of bacteria. The genomes of the bacteria lived in the unpolluted stream is compared with the genome of the bacterial species lived in polluted water. The comparison between the two databases derived from the genomes of the bacteria will confirm the types of bacteria in the polluted and unpolluted stream.

The genetic analysis is done from the bacteriapresent in the polluted or unpolluted stream. The genetic information from the bacteria is compared with the genetic information which is existing in the bacterial genomes. The sequences of DNA present in database entries is compared with databases of the genomes of bacteria present in both the streams.

Conclusion

The genomes of the bacteria of the polluted and unpolluted stream are compared with each other and with the databases which are derived from the existing bacteria.
