Concept explainers
Forensic Studies Forensic scientists use the lengths of the tibia (t), a bone from the ankle to the knee, and the femur (r), the bone from the knee to the hip socket, to calculate the height of a person. A person's height (h) is determined from the lengths of these bones using functions defined by the following formulas. All measurements are in centimeters.
For men: | For women: |
h(r) = 69.09 + 2.24r | h(r) = 61.41 + 2.32r |
or h(t) = 81.69 + 2.39/ | or h(t) = 72.57 + 2.53f |
(a) Find the height of a man with a femur measuring 56 centimeters.
(b) Find the height of a man with a tibia measuring 40 centimeters.
(c) Find the height of a woman with a femur measuring 50 centimeters.
(d) Find the height of a woman with a tibia measuring 36 centimeters.

Michael Kasha, of Florida State University, used physics and mathematics to design a classical guitar. He used the model for the frequency of the vibrations on a circular plate v = 2.6t / d2 sqrt( E/P) where v is the frequency (in vibrations per second), t is the plate thickness (in millimeters), d is the diameter of the plate, E is the elasticity of the plate material, and ? is the density of the plate material. For fixed values of d, E, and the graph of the equation is a line, as shown in the figure. Estimate the frequency when the plate thickness is 4 millimeters.______ vibrations/secarrow_forwardDE = 15 E w,arrow_forward
