Athletes are trained for long-distance run including marathon and cross-country skiers at high-altitude locations because the low oxygen levels at high altitudes stimulate increased production of red blood cells. Erythropoietin is a hormone produced by the kidneys. It helps in the formation of red blood cells. These red blood cells carry oxygen from the lungs to the other parts of the body. Kidney cells are sensitive to low oxygen level in the blood.
