Chapter 8.1, Problem 8.2P
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation:
The name of the acid
Concept Introduction:
Oxoacids: Oxoacids are derived from oxoanions. Oxoacids contains at least one oxygen atom and at least one hydrogen atom is bonded to oxygen atom.
Naming of acids from anions:
For acids derived from the anions that ends in the suffix “-ide”, the prefix hydro is added and “-ide” is changed to “-ic acid”.
For acids derived from polyatomic anions that ends in the suffix “-ate” is changed to “-ic acid”.
For acids derived from polyatomic anions that ends in the suffix “-ite” is changed to “-ous acid”.

If the polyatomic anion ClO 2− is called chlorite, what is the name for the acid HClO 2?
Some polyatomic anions contain a metal as part of the anion. For example, the anion dichromate has the formula Cr 2O 72 − and the anion permanganate has the formula MnO 4−. Write the formula of the ionic compound formed from each of these anions and a potassium cation. Name each compound.
Cobalt, a transition metal, forms both the Co2+and Co3+ions. Write the correct formulas and give the name for the oxides formed by the two different ions.
