Elaine had some money saved for a week- long vacation. The first days of the vacation she spent $125 on food and a hotel. On the second day, she was given $80 from her sister for expenses. Elaine then had $635 left for the rest of the vacation.

Calculation:

Let Elaine begin with $x$ money in dollars.

Since, on the first days she spent $125. Therefore money left after first days will be

  $x-125$

On the second days her sister gave her $80. Therefore, amount on the second day will be

  $x-125+80=x-45$

Also, after second day she is left with $635. Therefore,

  $\begin{array}{l}x-45=635\\ x=635+45\\ x=680\end{array}$

Hence,

Elaine begins her trip with $680.
