Chapter 8, Problem 8.97CQ
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

“The volume of CO2 gas that can be produced at (STP) from 881g of propane” should be calculated

Concept Introduction:

► Here, we have used the concept of stoichiometry where when reactants undergo a reaction, they form product in certain ratio based on the number of moles associated with the elements which are participated in the reaction.

Thus, in stoichiometric calculation we come across chemical formula and chemical equation.

► A chemical equation directly states that the substance and the number of moles of each substance involved in the chemical reaction.

► The number of moles is related to the mass of the substance by the following relation

n =mM

Where n is the number of moles

m= mass of the substance

M is the molar mass of the substance

► STP is the standard temperature and pressure for one mole of a gas

The volume of gas at STP is 22.4L

► Molar mass is the number of times a molecule of the substance is heavier than 112th the mass of an atom of carbon 12. It can be calculated by adding the atomic masses of all the atoms present in the molecule.

Given:

Mass of C3H8= 881g

A certain half-reaction has a standard reduction potential Ered +1.26 V. An engineer proposes using this half-reaction at the anode of a galvanic cell that must provide at least 1.10 V of electrical power. The cell will operate under standard conditions. Note for advanced students: assume the engineer requires this half-reaction to happen at the anode of the cell. Is there a minimum standard reduction potential that the half-reaction used at the cathode of this cell can have? If so, check the "yes" box and calculate the minimum. Round your answer to 2 decimal places. If there is no lower limit, check the "no" box.. Is there a maximum standard reduction potential that the half-reaction used at the cathode of this cell can have? If so, check the "yes" box and calculate the maximum.
