The relationship between atomic size and reducing strength in group
Concept introduction:
Atomic size is a measure of the size of the atoms It is the distance from the nucleus to the valence shell where the electrons are located. It increases down the group and decreases along the period.
The ionization energy is the amount of energy required to remove the most loosely bound valence electrons from an isolated neutral gaseous atom. It is represented by IE. Its value decreases down the group and increases along the period.
Oxidation occurs when there is a loss of electrons The element that loses its electrons itself gets oxidized and act as a reducing agent. Its strength is determined by the ease with which it loses the electron.
Reduction happens when there is a gain of electrons. The element that gains electrons from the other species itself gets reduced and act as an oxidizing agent. Its strength can be measured by the ease with which it gains electrons.
