DATA For the Texas Department of Public Safety, you are investigating an accident that occurred early on a foggy morning in a remote section of the Texas Panhandle. A 2012 Prius traveling due north collided in a highway intersection with a 2013 Dodge Durango that was traveling due east. After the collision, the wreckage of the two vehicles was locked together and skidded across the level ground until it struck a tree. You measure that the tree is 35 ft from the point of impact. The line from the point of impact to the tree is in a direction 39° north of east. From experience, you estimate that the coefficient of kinetic friction between the ground and the wreckage is 0.45. Shortly before the collision, a highway patrolman with a radar gun measured the speed of the Prius to be 50 mph and, according to a witness, the Prius driver made no attempt to slow down. Four people with a total weight of 460 lb were in the Durango. The only person in the Prius was the 150-lb driver. The Durango with its passengers had a weight of 6500 lb, and the Prius with its driver had a weight of 3042 lb. (a) What was the Durango’s speed just before the collision? (b) How fast was the wreckage traveling just before it struck the tree?

- A bullet is found embedded in the wall of a room 2.9 m above the floor. The bullet entered the wall going upward at an angle of 34.9°. How far from the wall was the bullet fired if the gun was held 1.3 m above the floor?arrow_forwardA person driving on I-82 glanced at his phone to read a very important text message. When he looked back up at the road, he saw that the traffic ahead had come to a standstill and he immediately slammed on his brakes. His car created 96.5 m long skid marks before rear-ending another car. Unfortunately, a passenger in the rear-ended car was seriously injured, thus requiring an investigation by the State Patrol. The State Patrol has no proof of distracted driving, however they want to determine if a citation for speeding should be issued. A State Patrol investigator used a 3.9 kg drag sled to determine the coefficient of kinetic friction between the road and the tires of the car. The drag sled's spring scale read 28 N when it was pulled along the ground at a constant speed. Use Newton's Second Law and kinematics to estimate the minimum value of the car's speed when the driver locked the brakes. (answer: about 83 mi/hr) Note: You do not need the mass of the car to answer this question.…arrow_forwardA person driving on I-82 glanced at his phone to read a very important text message. - You are working part-time for the GT Sports Media Complex, editing video for the women’s softball team. In one particular clip, a GT player hits a home run over the center field fence. The ball leaves the bat at a height of 4 ft, and crosses the outfield fence (220 ft away) at a height of 10 ft. Logs of the game indicate that the pitch was clocked at 68 mph as it reached the plate. Your frame-by-frame analysis of the 30-frame-per-second video indicate that the ball spent only a single frame in contact with tha bat, and another 126 frames travelling to the outfield fence. A quick internet seach tells you that a typical college softball weighs 0.4 lb. How many pounds of average force act on the ball during ocntact with the bat?arrow_forwardA standard Ford F150 has a standard tire size of 25.7 inches in diameter. You decided to replace the standard tires with a tire with a diameter of 28.2 inches without updating the onboard computer. Last week you were stopped for speeding on the highway where the speed limit is 65 mph. With the change in tires, how fast was the truck actually traveling when the speedometer read 65 mph? If you had used 24 inch tires, what would the actual speed have been if the speedometer read 65 mph?arrow_forwardA student's car stalls right in front of a speed bump while she is on her way to physics class. To pull it over the bump, she ties a cable to her bumper and to a nearby tree, and pulls with a force, F, of 81.0 lbs (360 N) at the midpoint in a perpendicular direction. If θ is 11.0°, what is the size of the force pulling the car in lbsarrow_forward
- Kyle, a 95.0 kg football player, leaps straight up into the air (with no horizontal velocity) to catch a pass. He catches the 0.430 kgball precisely at the peak of his jump, when he is 0.386 meters off the ground. He hits the ground 0.0371 meters away from where he leapt. If the ball was moving horizontally when it was caught, how fast was the ball traveling?arrow_forwardA robot with fancy wheels is trained to move in two directions simultaneously. The force in the forward direction is 10 N and the force in the horizontal direction is 8 N. If the robot starts from rest, has a mass of 75 kg and travels for 100 seconds, what is the magnitude of the robot's final displacement?arrow_forwardYou go watch your friend as she runs at a cross country meet. The first time she passes you, your friend runs by going due north at a speed of 4.40 m/s. You move to a different place on the course and twelve minutes after you saw her the first time, your friend runs past you again. This time she is traveling at a speed of 3.80 m/s in the direction 30.0° W of S. What is the direction of her average acceleration between those same two times?arrow_forward
