In the nucleus of each cell, DNA is packaged into thread-like structures known as chromosomes. Each chromosome contains DNA coiled around histone proteins. Human body cells have two sets of 23 chromosomes. 22 pairs of chromosomes are autosomes and one pair is the sex chromosome.
