A grindstone in the shape of a solid disk with diameter 0.520 m and a mass of 50.0 kg is rotating at 850 rev/min. You press an axe against the rim with a normal force of 160 N (see Figure below), and the grindstone comes to rest in 7.50 s.
What is the moment of inertia of the grindstone?
What force is bringing the grindstone to a stop? What is the net torque caused by that force?
What is the size of the force?
What is the coefficient of friction between the axe and the grindstone?
5. A train changes its speed uniformly from 60mph (miles per hour) to 30mph in a distance of 1500ft. What is the acceleration? Express your answer in ft/s2.
Question 1:
A girl and her 40kg dog are out walking one summer day when they come to a road they need to
cross. The pavement is hot, so the girl borrows a skateboard for her dog and gives him a push to
get him across the road so that his feet won’t burn.
If the road is 10 meters wide, using the EQUATION OF WORK AND ENERGY, find the
magnitude of the initial velocity required so that the dog will coast across the road and come to
rest at 10 meters away on the other side of the road. The coefficient of kinetic friction between
the wheels and the pavement is 0.3.
