Chapter 8, Problem 2GFO
Summary Introduction
To determine:
The concept behind the provision of education for Down syndrome people.
The genetic disorders can be treated by education or not.
Introduction:
Down syndrome, also termed as trisomy 21, is a genetic disorder caused by the presence of third copy of chromosome 21. People suffering from this disease have retardation in growth, less thinking ability, and characteristic facial features. It is believed that the extra chromosome occurs by chance and is not affected by environmental factors.

A couple contemplating a pregnancy are in today for an appointment at a genetic counselling clinic to identify and interpret their risk of an inherited disorder. The nurse explains during teaching that all the following are characteristic features of fragile X chromosome of a 3-year-old male child EXCEPT:
a. Macroorchidism
b. Autistic behavior
c. Intellectual disability
d. Characteristic facial features
e. Hyperextensible finger joints
Imagine that you are in your late 30s or early 40s and decide that you want a child.
You realize that you’re at greater risk of having a child with Down’s Syndrome.
What sorts of genetic screening are available today? If you find out that this child has
this condition, do you think it’s appropriate to have an abortion? Why or why not?
Question: Does elective abortion of fetuses with physical or other developmental disabilities
have an effect on the perception of personhood, dignity, and rights in society?
Explain.
What is the probability that they will have a baby boy with brown eyes and cleft chin
Parents Genotype :
Bb/bb – Eye Color - (brown eyes dominant , blue eyes recessive)
Dd- Dimples ( dominant)
Cc/cc- Cleft chin (Dominant)

Her doctor was able to tell her that her twins are dizygotic twins via ultrasound. In your essay, describe the difference between monozygotic and dizygotic twins and explain how each is conceived. Alex is also wondering about the genetics of her children and how they will act when they are older. Offer an explanation of genotype and phenotype and provide an example of each specific to Alex’s future children being dizygotic twins. Finally, in your previous explanation be sure to also describe how most traits are both polygenic and multifactorial and how that may influence her twins’ phenotypes.arrow_forward
