A kernel is the component of an operating system.

• It acts as the bridge or interface between the applications.
• That is, the kernel is used to process of manage the interface between the software and hardware applications.
• It is a set of program used to control and perform the tasks such as managing memory and handling the disk drives.
• It consists of all the drivers for the computer system.
• Some of the main tasks of kernel are:
  • Interrupt handling
  • Process management
  • File system
  • Device management
  • System calls
