Concept introduction:

Photorespiration ( ${\text{C}}_{\text{2}}$ photosynthesis) occurs when rubisco does its oxygenase function and combines oxygen in place of carbon dioxide to RuBP (ribulose bisphosphate). This is a wasteful process and it also competes with Calvin cycle.
