Chapter 8, Problem 12E
Summary Introduction

To identify: The monosaccharides and their linkages in the following disaccharide.

Concept introduction:

The biomolecules that are composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen are collectively called as carbohydrates. They are also known as sugars or saccharides. Based on the behavior on hydrolysis, carbohydrates can be classified into monosaccharides, disaccharides, and polysaccharides. On hydrolysis, monosaccharides cannot be hydrolyzed into simpler compounds. Disaccharides can yield two molecules of monosaccharides, on hydrolysis, that are joined together by using glycosidic linkage. Polysaccharides are composed of several monosaccharide units; on hydrolysis, they are joined together by glycosidic linkage.
