Chapter 7.S, Problem 1VC
Summary Introduction
Case summary:
The AP hospital has experienced a considerable growth in the demand for its services. The main focus of the hospital is on the delivery of babies. Due to the growing popularity and despite serving many people, the hospital was unable to satisfy the complete demand.
The hospital was ready for the new building’s capacity expansion process. There were 35 teams appointed to analyze the expansion processes and to decide all the process functions after the expansion. When the new facility is put up, running the hospital will match the demand efficiently.
To determine: The approach taken by AP hospital to meet the capacity with the demand.

Cost Allocation; Cost Shifting In the last several years, airlines have succeeded in boosting profits by adding fees for previously free services such as in-flight snacks and meals, checked baggage, priority boarding, and other services. These fees have caused some shifts in customer behavior,as more airline passengers bring their own snacks on the airline and pack a smaller bag that isacceptable for “carry-on.” By using carry-on luggage, the airline customer can save $25 or more inbaggage-checking fees. This situation has resulted in a cost shifting for passengers, airlines, and airport security. As the number of checked bags decreases, the cost of baggage handling for the airlinesdecreases (and revenues increase for those bags that are checked). In contrast, the costs and delaysin security checkpoints increase as security personnel must check additional carry-on bags, causingdelays for passengers and the need for additional security personnel to handle the increased numberof carry-on…

One of only six hospitals in the U.S. to specialize in health care for women and children, Arnold Palmer Hospital has cared for over 1,500,000 patients who came to the Orlando facility from all 50 states and more than 100 other countries. With patient satisfaction scores in the top 10% of U.S. hospitals surveyed (over 95% of patients would recommend the hospital to others), one of Arnold Palmer Hospital’s main focuses is delivery of babies. Originally built with 281 beds and a capacity for 6,500 births per year, the hospital steadily approached and then passed 10,000 births. Looking at Table S7.4 , Executive Director Kathy Swanson knew an expansion was necessary. With continuing population growth in its market area serving 18 central Florida counties, Arnold Palmer Hospital was delivering the equivalent of a kindergarten class of babies every day and still not meeting demand.…arrow_forward
