Introduction:
A neurotransmitter molecule performs the function of a ligand that fuses with its respective specific and unique receptor protein and for those ion channels that are ligand gated. This protein acts as an ion channel thus performing twin functions. For instance, there is a family of ligand gated channels which comprises five polypeptide chains around the ion channels, namely nicotinic ACh receptors.
