Chapter 7, Problem 32Q
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The ejection of high-speed electron from the nucleus through beta decay has to be explained using the model of neutron given.

Concept Introduction:

The atom from which the alpha and beta emission occur will undergo transformation.

Alpha particle is nothing but a helium nucleus which has 2 proton and mass number 4. So during the emission of an alpha particle the atomic number of the parent nuclei will be decreased by 2 and mass number will be reduced by 4.

During beta decay an electron is emitted which has a charge of -1 and zero mass number. So, during beta decay atomic number of the parent nucleus will be increased by one and mass number will be unaffected in order to make a balanced nuclear reaction.
