Textbook Question
Chapter 7, Problem 1LTB
List several ways in which meiosis differs from mitosis.
Expert Solution & Answer
Summary Introduction
To write:
Differences between meiosis and mitosis.
Introduction:
There are two types of cell division- (a) Meiosis and (b) Mitosis. The meiotic process occurs in gametes whereas, the meiotic process occurs in body cells. Precise genetic copies of the parent cell are the new cells produced as a result of mitosis. Meiosis lowers the chromosome number by half.
Explanation of Solution
The difference between the mitosis and meiosis is given as follows:
Meiosis | Mitosis |
1. It happens in germ cells. | 1. It occurs in somatic cells |
2. It involves crossing over. | 2. It does not involve crossing-over. |
3. It includes two nuclear divisions. | 4. It involves one nuclear division. |
5. The pairing of chromosomes takes place. | 3. No chromosome pairing is seen. |
Conclusion
Meiosis takes place in germ cells and mitosis occurs in somatic cells. Meiosis forms 4 daughter cells which are haploid, but mitosis produces two daughter cells, which are clones.
