Epiphyseal cartilage is responsible for the lengthwise growth of bones in animals and birds. It is composed of gelatinous hyaline cartilage tissue. It is situated between diaphysis and epiphysis. Epiphyseal cartilage is also known as physis or simply a growth plate.
