Summary Introduction

To Determine:

Whether organizations should be concerned about the sleepiness of their employees and the factors influencing sleep that might be more or less under the control of the organization.

Case Summary: Sleepiness is a costly organizational problem we can no longer overlook. It lowers performance and productivity and increases unethical behavior, accidents and injuries. The effect of sleepiness affects the organization which in turn leads to longer working hours and thus more sleepiness. Thus, it seems to be a vicious cycle. Researches on sleep deprivation has found that sleep deprived and tired workers faces more of back pain, heart diseases, less productivity, depression, anxiety and dissatisfaction from their jobs.

Adequate Information: One of the research surveys has found that 12% of workers were late to work, 2% did not go to work because of sleepiness, 4% of workers left work place early and 29% of workers slept at their work stations.
