The function of acetylcholinesterase and its physiological significance.
Introduction:
To block the activity of postsynaptic cell, free ACh (acetylcholine) has to be inactivated immediately after the release of the same. The ACh inactivation is attained by acetylcholinesterase enzyme or AChE and it is present in the nerve terminals of both pre- and post-synaptic neurons and is bound to the membrane. It hydrolyzes acetylcholine into acetate and choline that can gain reentry into presynaptic terminal buttons to be further resynthesized into acetylcholine (ACh).
