You can save money on electricity if you put your refrigerator in the basement, which is usually cooler than the rest of your house. Explain.
A cylindrical resistor element on a circuit board dissipates 0.15 W of power in an environment
at 40°C. The resistor is 1.2 cm long, and has a diameter of 0.3 cm. Assuming heat to be
transferred uniformly from all surfaces, determine the amount of heat this resistor dissipates
during a 24 h period;
Water flows through a shower head steadily at a rate of 10 L/min. An electric resistance heater placed in the water pipe heats the water from 16 to 43°C. Taking the density of water to be 1 kg/L, determine the electric power input to the heater, in kW. In an effort to conserve energy, it is proposed to pass the drained warm water at a temperature of 39°C through a heat exchanger to preheat the incoming cold water. If the heat exchanger has an effectiveness of 0.50 (i.e., it recovers only half of the energy that can possibly be transferred from the drained water to incoming cold water), determine the electric power input required in this case. If the price of the electric energy is 11.5 ¢/kWh, determine how much money is saved during a 10-min shower as a result of installing this heat exchanger.

- A certain car has 14 L of liquid coolant circulating at a temperature of 95 degrees Celsius through the engine’s cooling system. Assume that, in this normal condition, the coolant completely fills the 3.5 L volume of the aluminum radiator and the 10.5 L internal cavities within the aluminum engine. When a car overheats, the radiator, engine, and coolant expand and a small reservoir connected to the radiator catches any resultant coolant overflow. Estimate how much coolant overflows to the reservoir if the system goes from 95 degrees Celsius to 106 degrees Celsius. Model the radiator and engine as hollow shells of aluminum. The coefficient of volume expansion for coolant is 410x10^-6 degrees Celsiusarrow_forwardThe second law of thermodynamics states that heat by itself flows only from bodies of higher temperature to bodies of lower temperature. If a refrigerator transfers heat from the cold cooling coils to the warm surroundings, does this not violate the stated law? Explain.arrow_forwardYou are pumping liquid nitrogen at a temperature of -196°C through a long, thin-walled pipe; ignore the resistance of the pipe material and assume that the outside temperature of the pipe is the same as the liquid nitrogen. The pipe has an outside diameter of 12.0 cm; and is buried in the ground (k = 0.52 W/(m-k), ground surface temperature = 18.0°C) at a depth of 3.2 meters (distance from the surface of the ground to the centerline of the pipe). To reduce the heat loss from the pipe, it is insulated with a 5.0 cm layer of cryogenic insulation, k = 0.0017 W/(m-k). Draw a sketch of this problem; draw the resistor diagram, and assuming steady-state conditions calculate the heat gain per meter length of the pipe.arrow_forward
