Quorum sensing is used to sense the presence of its own species or other species which triggers the regulatory pathways that are controlled by the cell population. Bacteria use this mechanism to ensure a certain amount of bacteria before initiating activities. Autoinducer is a chemical that is produced by the bacterium which is a major player in the signalling pathway involved in quorum sensing.
