Math in Your Life: Between the Numbers
We mentioned in Math in Your Life on page 278 that changing the placement of commas can change the meaning of a sentence. For example:
A panda walks into a cafe and orders a bamboo sandwich. After finishing his meal, he pulls out a gun and shoots the waiter. The police arresting him ask, “Why did you do that?” The panda responds, “I have to because it says in my encyclopedia that a panda eats, shoots, and leaves.”
The panda has misplaced his commas and changed the meaning of the sentence. It should read “ that a panda eats shoots and leaves,” meaning that his diet consists of shoots and leaves.
My daughter recently said to her husband, “We have cream cheese and bagels in the freezer.” What do you think she really said?
