Solve each word problem

You have a cable plan that costs $39 a month for a basic plan plus one movie channel. Your friend has the same basic plan plus two movie channels for $45.50. What is the basic plan charge that you both pay?

Price of the basic plan is $32.5.

Explanation of Solution

Given information :

Price of basic plan plus one movie channel is $39.

Price of basic plan plus two movie channel is $45.50.

Let the price of basic plan is x and movie channel is y .

Hence two equations are,

  $\begin{array}{l}x+y=39\\ x+2y=45.5\end{array}$

Now we shall multiply first equation with 2 and then subtract it from second we get,

  $\begin{array}{c}x+2y-2\left(x+y\right)=45.5-78\\ x+2y-2x-2y=-32.5\\ -x=-32.5\\ x=32.5\end{array}$

Price of the basic plan is $32.5.
