Solve each word problem

The sum of two numbers is 27. The larger number is 3 more than the smaller number. What are the two numbers?

Smaller number is 12 and larger number is 15.

Explanation of Solution

Given information :

Sum of two numbers is 27.4.

Larger number is 3 more that the other.

Let the larger number be x and shorter number be y .

Hence we get,

  $\begin{array}{l}x+y=27\\ x=y+3\end{array}$

Now put the value of $x$ from second equation to the first equation we get,

  $\begin{array}{l}y+3+y=27\\ 2y=27-3\\ 2y=24\\ y=12\end{array}$

Hence smaller number is 12 and larger number is 12 + 3 = 15.
