Organophosphates (organic compounds containing phosphate groups) are commonly used as insecticides to improve crop yield. Organophosphates typically interfere with nerve signal transmission by inhibiting the enzymes that degrade transmitter molecules. They affect humans and other vertebrates as well as insects. Thus, the use of organophosphate pesticides poses some health risks. On the other hand, these molecules break down rapidly upon exposure to air and sunlight. As a consumer, what level of risk are you willing to accept in exchange for an abundant and affordable food supply? Explain your thinking.

- Cyclic AMP (CAMP) is an important signaling molecule in cells. The synthesis and degradation of CAMP is diagrammed in the following figure: ATP ©2017 Pearson Education, Inc. 12pt Adenylyl cyclase Edit View Insert Format Tools Table Paragraph Pyrophosphate 3'c- P-P₁ 5'C BI Both caffeine (coffee, cola) and theophylline inhibit the enzyme phosphodiesterase that converts CAMP to AMP, allowing cAMP levels to temporarily remain high. Briefly discuss the possible effect of these drugs on the second messenger action of CAMP. What might the effect of caffeine of theophylline be on a signaling pathway? CAMP UA Phosphodiesterase T² H₂O AMP ⠀arrow_forwardWhich of the following is true of oxytocin? Multiple Choice The paraventricular nuclei are neurons where oxytocin is synthesized. Phenylalanine and arginine are the amino acids present in oxytocin. Oxytocin is essential for water conservation throughout life. Oxytocin is not a polypeptide.arrow_forwardPolychlorinated biphenyls (PBCS) are a group of chemicals with a wide range of uses in manufacturing and found in fire retardants, plastics, adhesives, and lubricants, to name of few of its uses. They are now banned but are still present in waterways and in our environment. They are extremely stable under most conditions and fat soluble. Even at low doses, they can mimic natural hormones found in many animals and can disrupt the development. They are known as "hormone disruptors." PBCS have also been known to cause cancer. What else can you anticipate from these PBCS? PBCS are likely to undergo biomagnification. PBCS are likely to undergo eutrophication. PBCS are the rare compounds that can exhibit both eutrophication and biomagnification. PBCS no longer pose a problem because their use has now ceased and we have medical interventions for reversing their effects. PBCS are likely to concentrate only in secondary consumers.arrow_forward

- Nutrition has been one of the major problems that our country is facing most specially in this time of pandemic. As one of the trusted chemists of the Local Government Unit you were tasked to make an ideal meal plan that will serve as a “meal guide’ for families in preparing their daily meals. Your food pyramid must show the BIOMOLECULES of life for each level (GO, GROW, GLOW and FLOW foods). You must also show sample computations of carbohydrates that will take place once the specific food in the food group is digested, this is to show your audience an evidence on how important your food pyramid is. You must present your work using a multimedia presentation. In line with this task, the following must be prepared: list of biomolecules in your meal plan; (TEST 1) computation of chemical reaction that will take place once digestion happened; (TEST 2) narrative/description that will explain and convince your reader on the importance of your food pyramid. Pentobarbital has been preferred over thiopental, but it seems constantly to be in a shortage. There have been complains against the use of thiopental. Based on the chemical structure and interaction with the two main environments of a biological system (water and lipids) which one will get into the cell and distribute faster? Which one will stay longer into the system and for what reason? In your explanations please refer to the stuctures provided below.
