Sarah has a startup business that makes two distinct bird feeders that she has designed. Sarah is planning on operating a small factory to build the bird feeders. She is looking at two possible locations, A and B. If she chooses location A, the lease on the building will be higher than location B, thus leading to higher fixed costs than what she would have with location B. However, if she makes more than 20,000 units, both locations will likely have to be expanded, both the physical buildings and the manufacturing equipment. Variable costs to produce each unit will vary by location as well as by product. For example, the first design will have variable costs of $10 and $15 in locations A and B respectively, while the second bird feeder design will have variable costs of $20 and $25 respectively depending on location. However, she thinks that variable costs will decrease if she sells more than 5,000 units, as she will receive discounts from her suppliers at that point. She is unsure of…
Trips Logistics, a third-party logistics firm that provides warehousing and other logistics services, is facing a decision regarding the amount of space to lease for the upcoming three-year period. The general manager has forecast that Trips Logistics will need to handle a demand of 100,000 units for each of the next three years. Historically, Trips Logistics has required 1,000 square feet of warehouse space for every 1,000 units of demand. For the purposes of this discussion, the only cost Trips Logistics faces is the cost for the warehouse. Trips Logistics receives revenue of $1.22 for each unit of demand. The general manager must decide whether to sign a three-year lease or obtain warehousing space on the spot market each year. The three-year lease will cost $1 per square foot per year, and the spot market rate is expected to be $1.20 per square foot per year for each of the three years. Trips Logistics has a discount rate of k = 0.1.
Jerry Wei, the hospital administrator at St. Charles General, must appoint head nurses to four newly established departments: urology, cardiology, orthopedics, and obstetrics. In anticipation of this staffing problem, he had hired four nurses, considered their backgrounds,
personalities, and talents, and developed a cost scale ranging from 0 to 100 to be used in the assignment. A 0 for a nurse being assigned to the cardiology unit implies that the nurse would be perfectly suited to that task. A value close to 100, on the other hand, would imply that
he or she is not at all suited to head that unit. The accompanying table gives the complete set of cost figures that the hospital administrator feels represented all possible assignments. Which nurse should be assigned to which unit?

At present, the company strikes a customer from its mailing list if a customer fails to order from six consecutive catalogs. The company wants to know whether striking a customer from its list after a customer fails to order from four consecutive catalogs results in a higher profit per customer. The following data are available: If a customer placed an order the last time she received a catalog, then there is a 20% chance she will order from the next catalog. If a customer last placed an order one catalog ago, there is a 16% chance she will order from the next catalog she receives. If a customer last placed an order two catalogs ago, there is a 12% chance she will order from the next catalog she receives. If a customer last placed an order three catalogs ago, there is an 8% chance she will order from the next catalog she receives.
