As weather balloons rise from the earth's surface, the pressure of the atmosphere becomes less, tending to cause the volume of the balloons to expand. However, the temperature is much lower in the upper atmosphere than at sea level. Would this temperature effect tend to make such a balloon expand or contract? Weather balloons do, in fact, expand as they rise. What does this tell you?
When the air inside a hot air balloon is heated, why does the balloon rise? (Assume the air pressure inside the balloon is equal to the air pressure outside the balloon.)
Would you expect the temperature of a liquid to change as it is throttled? Explain.

- How do gases differ from liquids?arrow_forwardAn airtight dispenser for drinking water is 25 cm × 10 cm in horizontal dimensions and 20 cm tall. It has a tap of negligible volume that opens at the level of the bottom of the dispenser. Initially, it contains Water to a level 3.0 cm from the top and air at the ambient pressure, 1.00 atm, from there to the top. When the tap is opened, water will flow out until the gauge pressure at the bottom of dispenser, and thus at the opening of the tap, is 0. What volume of water flows out?
