The effect of the drug MK-0518 on the life cycle of HIV is to be discussed.
Concept introduction:
Human immunodeficiency virus or HIV causes AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome).
HIV has mainly three types of enzymes, reverse transcriptase, protease, and integrase. The activity of these three enzymes is essential for the virus; without them it dies.
Anti-HIV drugs act as inhibitors of the above-stated enzymes and block their activity. MK-0518 is an anti-HIV drug made by a company called Merck.
