Answer to Problem 6.1P

The sludge requirement is 50% .

The refuse requirement is 50% .

Explanation of Solution

Given:

Required C/N ratio is 20:1 .

  C/N ratio refuse is 24:1 .

  C/N ratio sludge is 16:1 .

Calculation:

Assume the refuse fraction be Xr .

Write the equation to calculate the sludge fraction.

  SF=(1Xr) ..... (I)

Here, the sludge fraction is SF .

Write the equation to complete the mass balance on carbon.

  20=24Xr+16(1Xr)5=6Xr+44Xr2Xr=1Xr=0.5

Calculate the value of Xr in percentage.

  Xr=(0.5×100)%=50%

Calculate the sludge fraction.

Substitute 0.5 for Xr in Equation (I).

  SF=10.5=(0.5×100)%=50%

Conclusion:

Thus, the mass balance on carbon is calculated first to find out the answer.

6-1. Assume that refuse has a C/N ratio of 24:1. If raw sludge with a C/N of 16:1 is to be added to refuse to reach a required C/N of 20:1, how much of each-refuse and sludge-is needed? (Note: Use a wet weight basis.)
List down the materials required in the installation of a waste pipe in the figure as shown using (a) 100 mm. diameter by 3.0 m. long cast iron pipe and (b) 100 mm. diameter by 6.0 m. long double pipe. The face to face distance is 22.25m.
3. Circular clarifiers are used to remove solid materials from water. They allow continuous treatment of water and can handle fairly large flows. Solids settle to the bottom of the clarifier and are carried away by a small stream of water (the waste stream). Most of the water exits the tank as treated effluent. Assume a clarifier receives a flow of 0.10 m3/s with a solid concentration of 800 mg/L. If the waste stream consists of 3% of the incoming flow and carries 90% of the incoming solids,   a) what is the solids concentration in the waste stream, and b) what is the solids concentration in the treated effluent?
