Chapter 6, Problem 36P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

According to the given reaction, various statements are to be explained.

Concept introduction:

The Cahn-Ingold-Prelog rule system ranks the substituents in the chirality center in the order of decreasing atomic number. Higher atomic number takes precedence over lower atomic number for the substituent.

If two groups directly attached to the chirality center are same then compare the atoms attached to them on the basis of their atomic numbers. At the first point of difference, the priority is determined.

SN2 reaction is a type of reaction having single step mechanism. In SN2 reaction inversion of configuration takes place.

In SN2 reaction nucleophile attacks from opposite side to the leaving group to give product.

Question 4 For the molecule shown below, (7 marks): A) Sketch the Newman projection for the view looking along the bond from the perspective of the arrow. B) Then, draw the Newman projection for each 60° rotation along the bond until it returns to the starting point. C) Clearly indicate which Newman projection is the one we see in the structure shown below, and clearly indicate which Newman projection is the highest in energy and which is the lowest in energy.
