Concept Introduction:
A Lewis structure is also known as Lewis dot diagrams or electron dot structures. The bond between atoms and lone pairs of electrons that is present in the molecule. Lewis structure represents each atom and their position in structure using the chemical symbol. Excess electrons forms the lone pair are given by pair of dots, and are located next to the atom.

- Write the Lewis structure for nitrosyl fluoride, FNO. Using only a periodic table, identify (a) which is the longer bond. (b) which is the stronger bond. (c) which is the more polar bond.arrow_forwardA polyatomic ion is composed of C, N, and an unknown element X. The skeletal Lewis structure of this polyatomic ion is [XCN]. The ion X2 has an electron configuration of [Ar]4s23d104p6. What is element X? Knowing the identity of X, complete the Lewis structure of the polyatomic ion, including all important resonance structures.arrow_forwardMethylcyanoacrylate is the active ingredient in super glues. Its Lewis structure is In this molecule, which is the (a) weakest carbon-containing bond? (b) strongest carbon-containing bond? (c) most polar bond?arrow_forward
- Write all resonance structures of chlorobenzene, C6H5Cl, a molecule with the same cyclic structure as benzene. In all structures, keep the CCl bond as a single bond. Which resonance structures are the most important?arrow_forwardMany monatomic ions are found in seawater, including the ions formed from the following list of elements. Write the Lewis symbols for the monatomic ions formed from the following elements: (a) Cl (b) Na (c) Mg (d) Ca (e) K (f) Br (g) Sr (h) Farrow_forwardHow many electron dots should appear in the Lewis structures for each of the following polyatomic ions? a. ClO b. ClO2 c. S22 d. NH4+arrow_forward
- Decide whether these proposed Lewis structures are reasonable. proposed Lewis structure Is the proposed Lewis structure reasonable? Yes. No, it has the wrong number of valence electrons. Н— Br The correct number is: U No, it has the right number of valence electrons but doesn't satisfy the octet rule. The symbols of the problem atoms are:* Yes. No, it has the wrong number of valence electrons. .. The correct number is: O Н — С — С — Н No, it has the right number of valence electrons but doesn't satisfy the octet rule. The symbols of the problem atoms are:* Yes. No, it has the wrong number of valence electrons. The correct number is: || Н — Н- No, it has the right number of valence electrons but doesn't satisfy the octet rule. The symbols of the problem atoms are:* :0 : :arrow_forwardH-0-F: Draw the correct Lewis structure for HOF, including all lone pairs of electrons.arrow_forwardWhat is a Lewis dot symbol? To what elements does the symbol mainly apply?arrow_forward
- For the structure CIO3 draw a Lewis structure using Cl as the central atom... For the structure that obeys the octet rule which of the following are correct? There are a total of 26 valence electrons There are a total of 24 valence electrons There are a total of 25 valence electrons OCI has one lone pair of electrons CI makes a double bond to one of the oxygens Each O has a -1 formal charge 20 atoms make a double bond to Cl All 30 atoms make a double bond to Clarrow_forwardWhat possible error(s) exist in the Lewis structure (assume we are trying to represent the best possible Lewis structure for the NO₂S ion knowing N is the central atom in this polyatomic ion)? [:ö==S: N= CO :O: The best structure would have double bond and two lone pairs on each oxygen atom and a single bond with three lone pairs on the sulfur. There are no errors. This is the best possible structure. The Lewis structure above does not minimize formal charges, thus is the not the best possible structure. The nitrogen atom has an expanded octet, and this structure is impossible. The Lewis structure contains the wrong number of electrons, thus this structure is impossible.arrow_forwardDraw the Lewis symbols for the atoms Al and O. Use the Lewis model to determine the formula for the compound that forms from these two atoms.arrow_forward
